In many ways I personally view cosplay as a combination of textiles, fashion, acting, performance art, sculpture, photography, love , passion and an expression of self. Cosplayers put time, effort and devotion into giving 2D images a breath of life by putting ourselves into the shoes of these characters and stories that we love as well as look up.
Similar to acting and drama, although the same characters are been played by many people, each person brings something different to make their cosplay unique. It is an escape from the mundane activities of everyday life and a way of expressing one’s inner self. Through cosplay we forget all that weighs us down and obtain the power of confidence.
Many people may judge and see cosplay is a childish thing to do, however that is not the case. The whole artistic and technical side to cosplay is far beyond childish. Not many people can say they can make elaborate Victorian dresses, prop swords and scythes, learnt new skills in artistic techniques and looked outside the box to create things from nothing. Not many people at all.
In the end, I believe cosplay to most people is something that gives life excitement, happiness, anticipation and joy.
